Hunting down student car insurance discounts can feel like an overwhelming task, but there are good choices if you know where to look.
Your age and the fact that you are a college student will unfortunately mean that you are in a category of driver that makes for higher rates than other populations. However, there are some companies that offer student discounts.
Did you know that there are even some companies offering an incentive for higher grades? Bring in proof of a B average of higher, and you may qualify for discounts.
They may be additional discounts which you have not considered. If you do not live in a dorm and are paying rent, you could combine your renter’s insurance with your car insurance via the same company. You will often get a significant reduction in costs this way. Living with family? Always request a family discount.
If you live on campus, you probably use your car much less than other drivers. This can be a benefit to you, not only in terms of gas and mileage, but also directly through your auto insurance company. Look for car insurance that offers a low mileage discount to drivers in your category, and you may save quite a bit per year.
Always put an alarm or a Lojack type system on your vehicle. If your car is less likely to be stolen or vandalized, that can translate to savings for you from the insurance side.
There is no question that finding student car insurance is an additional financial burden beyond the already high cost of being a student today. But if you really do need a car to get to class or to run errands around town, then make sure to thoroughly shop around, apply all relevant discounts, and negotiate the very best deal you possibly can.
